LAGOM in the holiday season

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

Recently in this blog, I wrote a bit about the Swedish term Lagom. Lagom doesn't directly translate to the English language, but it refers to a balance in all domains of life one should strive for. Finding a balance in how much you work, how much you eat and drink, your home's style, and, of course, your interior design, getting it just right, not too much, not too little. This is an important part of the Swedish - and Scandinavian – cultural DNA. As such, Lagom is also very easy to recognize in Scandinavian design; Clean lines, neutral backgrounds, no fuzz, a focus on function, simplicity, and at the end of the day: wellbeing.

More specifically, the principle of lagom, when applied to interior design, will suggest finding a balance in your décor so that you come home to a place that makes you feel good and in harmony with yourself.

A fundamental concept in Lagom is prioritizing quality over quantity. My mom always preached it (Still does!). This is something we would probably all be willing to sign up to – at least in theory: However, for most of us, it can be a bit harder in reality. Lagom is not about saying 'no,'' but about getting it just right and making sure that what you surround yourself with is a good match for you. Not too much, not too little.

When I curate the Norliibox, I am very mindful of this: My intention is not to provide value through great discounts but to find quality items that have a story and carry meaning and express the Scandinavian lifestyle. I am looking for pieces that can inspire you and your home. Norlii Box is a niche box and the December box's theme is 'Holiday Harmony,' and I hope that the items in the box, one by one or together, will inspire you to a Harmonious holiday season in the Lagom sense: Getting it just right.

In my next blog post, I will reflect some more on the practical application of Lagom and provide you with some tips on how to let Lagom inspire your home. I will also come back to the concept of Hygge.
