The Nordic mythology is the myths and legends of supernatural beings related to the pre-Christian Nordic religion way back when Vikings were habitants of the North. With popular TV series like Vikings, tales of the pagan gods have gained new strength.
Vikings celebrated Winter Solstice. The festivities confirmed that longer days were coming. The celebration was called ‘jol' and the Scandinavian word for Christmas is ‘Jul' deriving from the Vikings.
The myths tell us about Odin, the highest and oldest of the gods. He is often called 'father of jol,' and he rides on his eight-legged horse Sleipnir in the night skies. Sleipnir runs as fast as the wind and is equally comfortable on the ground as in the air. The myth even has it that children put out food for Sleipnir, and in return, Odin placed sweets or little gifts.
While Odin has remained a god from Norse Mythology, the traditions of his time are interwoven with modern-day Santa myths of flying reindeer and leaving cookies out for Santa.
